Award winning composer ELLIOT GOLDENTHAL recently signed to score director Michael Mann's upcoming PUBLIC ENEMIES. This film about the notorious figure of the 1930's, John Dillinger, features a top-drawer cast including: JOHNNIE DEPP and CHRISTIAN BALE. Public Enemies is slated for a 2009 release and may very well end up being one of the years best dramas...and it will be good to hear Goldthenal again. Below is the official press release:

Los Angeles, CA – June 27, 2008 – Oscar®-winning composer Elliot Goldenthal (Frida) has been signed to score Universal Pictures’ action-thriller from acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann, Public Enemies. Currently shooting in Chicago, Public Enemies stars Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in the incredible story of criminal folk hero John Dillinger (Depp), whose wave of bank robberies and the subsequent FBI manhunt, commanded by J. Edgar Hoover and run by Special Agent Melvin Purvis (Bale), fascinated the nation in the 1930s. The film also stars Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, Billy Crudup, Stephen Dorff, Rory Cochrane, Stephen Lang, David Wenham, Stephen Graham, Channing Tatum, and Jason Clarke. It arrives in theatres in July 2009.
Public Enemies reunites Goldenthal with Mann, with whom he previously teamed in 1995 for Heat. Goldenthal is an Oscar®-winning composer who creates works for orchestra, theatre, opera, ballet, and film. In 2003, he was honored with the Academy Award® and a Golden Globe for Best Original Score for Frida. A double Oscar® nominee that year, Goldenthal received an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Song (“Burn it Blue” performed by Caetano Veloso). Goldenthal has also received two other Oscar® and two Golden Globe nominations for his scores for Interview With the Vampire (1994) and Michael Collins (1996) and Grammy nominations for A Time to Kill (1996) and Batman Forever (1995).
He has also been nominated for two Grammys, two Tony Awards, and three Chicago Film Critics Awards. Goldenthal received the L.A. Film Critics Award for Best Original Score for his work on Neil Jordan’s The Butcher Boy. His other film credits include Across the Universe (for which Goldenthal produced and arranged the songs along with T-Bone Burnett, and composed the original score), Titus, Drugstore Cowboy, and Alien3, among others.
Goldenthal has also composed music for more than a dozen theatrical productions including Juan Darién: A Carnival Mass, which received 5 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. His 3-act ballet of Othello, choreographed by Lar Lubovitch and commissioned by the American Ballet Theater and San Francisco Ballet, debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1997 and was broadcast by PBS’s prestigious arts series Great Performances as a two-hour special performed by the San Francisco Ballet. This program garnered Goldenthal an Emmy nomination. In 2006, Goldenthal’s original 3-act opera Grendel, directed by Julie Taymor, premiered at the Los Angeles Opera and became one of the most successful productions in its history.
