Thor: The Dark World (Soundtrack) by Brian Tyler - Review

Thor: The Dark World (Soundtrack) by Brian Tyler - Review

Thunderous
Review by Edmund Meinerts

Another day, another Marvel film…With no end to the superhero craze in sight, THOR: THE DARK WORLD sees the hammer-swinging thunder-god’s home, Asgard, under threat from the Dark Elf Malekith, wielding a strange and evil force known as the Aether, and things become so desperate that Thor has to turn to his imprisoned brother (and eternal fan-favorite, who once again gets to smirk behind bars) Loki for help. The first film was directed by Kenneth Branagh and brought with it a strong but divisive PATRICK DOYLE score that has been hailed by some as a successful update of the composer’s style into the modern Hollywood blockbuster arena, and derided by others as a dumbing-down and repression of said style. With Branagh replaced by Alan Taylor for this sequel, the odds of DOYLE returning were slim; initially, CARTER BURWELL (of all people) was announced as his replacement, but he was ultimately replaced with the far safer choice of BRIAN TYLER, fresh off of his own Marvel excursion with IRON MAN 3...

2013 BMI Film & TV Awards - Composer Interviews

On May 15th, BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) held their annual awards gala, The Film & TV Awards, where they honor the composers of the years top-grossing films and top-rated television programs.

As they have done of late, they offer short videos with many of the top composers in the industry via their Youtube channel.  They've created a playlist of them all, which we offer to you above.  Interviews included are:  Christopher Lennertz, John Williams, Brian Tyler, Mark Isham, Cliff Martinez, Mike Post, David Buckley, Nathan Barr, Theodore Shapiro, iZler, Blake Neely and more!

As always, its great to see and hear from the people behind some of the past year's best music.  In addition to Cliff Martinez (this year's recipient of the Richard Kirk Award winner), Christopher Lennertz shares about playing the role of James Bond as a 9-year-old.  John Williams talks about scoring Lincoln (and looks great... strong enough to pull the ears off a gundark...or score a Star Wars film or something.).  Mark Isham shares about scoring the weekly "Once Upon a Time" and biopic "42." while David Buckley shares about scoring season-to-season on The Good Wife.  Brian Tyler talks about scoring a "post-Avengers" film, Iron Man 3, and iZLER reveals how gratifying and hair-raising it is to score two TV series at one time:  Revenge and Shameless.

Give the entire playlist a listen above and you can see a list of ALL the winners below:

Hollywood Records to Release Iron Man 3 Soundtrack by Brian Tyler on April 30th

Hollywood Records to Release Iron Man 3 Soundtrack by Brian Tyler on April 30th

Can you believe that it's almost been one year since THE AVENGERS blockbusted us?  Well, get ready to get riding again with Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) as the third installment, IRON MAN 3, is shooting off on May 3, 2013.

Lucky for us soundtrack-folk, the original score by BRIAN TYLER will get to us on an earlier flight than the film.  Hollywood Records (Where have they been, by the way?)  is releasing the soundtrack on April 30th and you, our fine, soundtrack-genius, friends are going to want to have this on pre-order.

Suffice it to say, those things you loved best from the scores of THE DARK KNIGHT, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and even THE AVENGERS all come together here with Brian Tyler tying it all together with his signature sound.  You might say, "Wha?"  "Huh?" But you can just stop that now and do some trusting.  It's quite a ride...with a final track that you are NOT expecting...but will probably love.

For all of the important deets, you can read the full presser below, including some insightful quotes from Tyler.  To make it easy on you, here is that little pre-order link.  Use it and help support this site.  Thanks!

MARVEL MUSIC/HOLLYWOOD RECORDS PRESENTS
MARVEL’S IRON MAN 3 ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SCORE SOUNDTRACK
AVAILABLE ON APRIL 30th

Original Score Composed and Conducted by Brian Tyler

Burbank, CA -- April 5, 2013-- Marvel Music/Hollywood Records will release the original motion picture soundtrack for “Marvel’s Iron Man 3” on April 30, 2013.  Brian Tyler composed and conducted the original score.

Tyler has scored over 60 films that have grossed $3.6 billion worldwide.  He has composed and conducted the scores for “Eagle Eye” for producer Steven Spielberg; the box office hits “Fast Five” and “Fast and Furious” for Justin Lin; “The Expendables,” “Expendables 2” and “Rambo” directed by Sylvester Stallone; “Law Abiding Citizen,” starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler; the Keanu Reeves thriller, “Constantine” and the epic science-fiction film “Battle: Los Angeles.”

Tyler said, “When Marvel and Shane Black approached me about scoring ‘Iron Man 3,’ I was thrilled as a long-time fan of the series and super hero films in general. We all wanted this score to have a deeply thematic component with a strong melody. We felt that the story would lend itself best to go classic and use the orchestra as the main voice of the music, with horns and trumpets singing the new Iron Man theme in a strong way. I conducted the London Philharmonic at Abbey Road in order to give the score a sound that felt powerful enough to live up to its name. Shane Black was very supportive and collaborative in his vision for the film and the score, and Kevin Feige was also a kindred spirit in really reaching for something special.  Both of them are incredible film score buffs, and we all spoke the same film music language, which made for an awesome experience. In the end we went for a score that echoed the classics of super hero film history with a few surprises like a wild 1960s style main title piece that was an absolute blast to record.”

Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968.

“Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures and DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing and Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film releases May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Marvel’s Iron Man 3 original motion picture soundtrack will be available wherever music is sold on April 30, 2013.

Unfortunately, Hasbro has asked that these tracks be removed.  Not only from our site but from Brian Tyler's own site!  Double unfortunately, the soundtrack is not being released.  I say, let Hasbro know that you want this excellent music released!

-----------------------------------------------------------

While some of you may be waiting, with bated breath, for Steve Jablonsky's score for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and others of you are feeling the heat of FAST FIVE, composer BRIAN TYLER offers you some of his own "transformic" work from the animated tv-series, TRANSFORMERS PRIME.  The series began airing back in November of 2010 on The Hub Network in the USA (does anyone actually have this channel?)  If you missed the airings, like me, you can roll on over to The Hub's site and watch the episodes there. (And therewith yet another reason for me to cancel my cable subscription).

Anyway, enjoy the 10 tracks that Brian Tyler has made available.  They will, at the very least, tide you over until Dark of the Moon is available, but I say it will do more than just that.  Well, let's have a listen and then post a comment on what you think of the music.

Unyielding Barrage
Review by Richard Buxton

Planet earth has been taking a real beating in recent months. Having only just recovered from the events of SKYLINE, the USA’s west coast is once again the victim of alien invasion, an invasion choreographed by South African director JONATHAN LIEBESMAN.

Having previously directed psychological thriller THE KILLING ROOM and horror DARKNESS FALLS, both scored by BRIAN TYLER, the two join forces once more for BATTLE: LOS ANGELES. With a worldwide invasion underway, the film follows the efforts of a single Marine platoon against the extraterrestrial antagonists. Prior to release the film was frequently described as ”Black Hawk Down with aliens”, suggesting a more personal and emotionally visceral experience when compared to most examples of the alien invasion genre. What transpired was perhaps less emotionally engaging than the filmmakers had hoped for, but BATTLE: LOS ANGELES pulls no punches in its delivery of relentless action as mankind faces the greatest threat of its brief existence.

Regardless of any shortfalls in the storytelling found in BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, the nature of the film has provided composer BRAIN TYLER with the opportunity to flex his action muscle, and he has certainly hasn’t shunned it, providing audiences with a bombastic and relentless barrage of ubiquitous action and bravado on an epic scale.

The Expendables (Soundtrack) by Brian Tyler - Review

The Expendables (Soundtrack) by Brian Tyler - Review

"Expendable?"
Review by Steve Townsley

For what seemed an inevitable (if somewhat late-coming) mash-up of action movie awesomeness, BRAIN TYLER’s score for THE EXPENDABLES is somewhat...formulaic? I hesitate to describe it as such, because I’m still waiting for it to “hit” me. For a project of this calibre, I want overblown, over-the-top music. Instead, a fairly standard action-movie score, with pulsing beats and drawn out winds and strings is delivered. This doesn’t make the score bad by any means, not for someone who likes the odd action score.

However, for the composer who made such a big first impression with powerhouse works like CHILDREN OF DUNE, and cues like “Summon the Worms” (a piece that is sure to secure Tyler’s immortality amongst epic-movie trailers editors), the merely serviceable score for THE EXPENDABLES feels like a step to the side. Do I expect too much from a still-“junior” film composer? Perhaps. If that is the case, though, at whom do I shake my fist? To be fair, I’m still waiting to catch the accompanying film, but I am still of a sort that likes to listen to scores before I see the movie. Based on the casting roster, (Stallone, Statham, Willis, Li, et. al.) I want to hear the the skies rock! I want the faux-Bruckheimer score that Harry Gregson-Williams provided for TEAM AMERICA and the action-genre pastiche that Theodore Shapiro gave TROPIC THUNDER. Granted, those films were comedies that treated their subjects with an almost straight-laced mock-epic quality...but really, should I take any movie that delivers--in one celluloid package--Rambo, The Transporter, John McClane, Wong Fei-hung, Ivan Drago, The Terminator, a smattering of WWF standards, and...ah...Mickey Rourke....seriously? Besides, the album art features an estimated eleventy-one billion automatic firearms and John-Rambo trademark-bad-guy-stabbers all garnishing a Big Freaking Skull. Your other soundtrack CDs will cower in fear from the total awesomeness of this CD on your library shelf.

Fast and Furious (Soundtrack) by Brian Tyler - Review

Fast and Furious (Soundtrack) by Brian Tyler - Review

Slower and Serious-er
Review by Christopher Coleman

Those crazy kids and their suped up cars are at it again. FAST AND FURIOUS is the fourth film of the box-office-dominating-franchise. Director Justin Lin, who directed THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT is back, along with stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster. It seems after three nitrous-laden films, there was still more high-speed-hi-jinx to bring to the big screen. Also returning to add his fuel to the fury is composer BRIAN TYLER. Tyler's score here is fraught with quick-tempoed, edgy, race/chase music again, but just as the storyline has matured some, the score also takes on more serious, dramatic ideas as well.

FAST AND FURIOUS, oddly enough is not a simple sequel, nor is it a prequel. It's actually a interquel, taking place between the events of the second (2 Fast 2 Furious) and third (Tokyo Drift) films. Many fans feel that this fourth episode returns the franchise to its roots; capitalizing on the elements that made the first film so successful. That belief is certainly evidenced by a record-setting, opening weekend box-office with over $70 million taken in. Regardless of the fandom and the money, critically-speaking, each successive Fast and Furious film received worse reviews than the one preceding it and such is the case here. FAST AND FURIOUS does bring back the most beloved characters of the series and certainly contains many of car-racing-and-chasing-thrills of its predecessors, but, at its heart, is a revenge tale. Unfortunately, the slightly-more-mature-storyline was comingled with slightly-less-mature-effects, reducing some of the key scenes, such as the tunnel races, to upscale video game footage. Perhaps its this unintended clash that has put the critics off. Still, with the advancing storyline centered around Diesel's character of Dominic, and being unaffected by the amount of effect shots or their final quality, BRIAN TYLER is given some new room to compose, giving FAST AND FURIOUS a distinguishing feel from the three before it.

Dragonball Evolution (Soundtrack) by Brian Tyler - Review

Dragonball Evolution (Soundtrack) by Brian Tyler - Review

I'm rather amazed that it took so long for the DRAGONBALL franchise to be made into a live action movie. I suppose the studios have had plenty to do pillaging the 60s and 70s for all their worth. While those decades are still being ransacked, Twentieth Century Fox decided to bring some 80s/90s nostalgia to the big screen as well. The genesis of DRAGONBALL goes all the way back to a simple, Japanese, manga-series of 1984, which has since evolved into a mega-franchise including: several animated series, trading card games, and video games. Actually, DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION is the second, live-action movie, but it's 1989 predecessor, DRAGONBALL: THE MAGIC BEGINS was a Taiwanese production that saw no theatrical release outside of China. Perhaps only the heartiest of DRAGONBALL fans even recall this film some 20 years later. Since the first glimpses of DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION hit the internet, it's safe to say that expectations, by mainstream audiences, were unsurprisingly low. Just as video-game-to-feature-film adaptations fall into the 80/20 failure rule, so it seems to be with manga/anime-to-feature-films. If the 1989 Dragonball film wasn't evidence enough , then we only need look to efforts like DETROIT METAL CITY, FIST OF THE NORTH STAR, or DEVILMAN as convincing additional evidence. Unfortunately, DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION doesn't manage to avoid a couple of the standard pitfalls of its predecessors such as: poor writing, second-rate production value, and the like, but it does turn up two surprises. The special effects are leagues ahead of what one might be expecting and BRIAN TYLER's heroic, symphonic score delivers some much needed emotional weight to the otherwise flimsy film.
