Cloverfield is coming April 22 - To DVD and not HD-DVD.

Just received an email from Paramount Pictures about their upcoming release of CLOVERFIELD. This is sure to be one of 2008's highest selling DVDs. If you didn't see it in the theater, I say don't bother unless you see it on a huge TV with an incredible sound system; otherwise, you'll be saying "What's the big friggin' deal?"

To HD or Not HD. That is the question.

Well, one of the big casualties to the "evil of blu" is that the CLOVERFIELD HD-DVD was eliminated by Paramount. What might also be lost are all of the special features that were to be a part of that release.

I'm sure CLOVERFIELD will also get a Blu-Ray release someday, but for the meanwhile, we'll either have to "slum it" with the DVD version or just wait. The only rumblings I've heard on the Blu-Ray front seem to mention this Summer. Good luck with that one. Most will be popping their paychecks to see Indy, Batty, Irony, and Speedy, by that time - not buying blu ray movies.

Also Paramount is holding an interesting contest where entrants submit a short video documenting where they were "When Cloverfield Hit." They even provide music and sound effects. Voting takes place on April 22, 2008. So head over to whencloverfieldhit.com on that day to cast your vote...or better yet, grab your handycam and submit something.

Looks like there will also be some sort of release of MICHAEL GIACCHINO's 13 minute piece which played over the credits entitled, "Roar!" Errr...I'm thinking iTunes? :(

J.J. Abrams on STAR TREK, CLOVERFIELD 2, and THE DARK TOWER

Ok...perhaps you've been in a cave right next door to mine and didn't know that the STAR TREK movie scheduled for a release on December 25, 2008 has been pushed back! I say a big, "Not cool!" to that. Looks like May 8, 2009 is the new date...so we'll have to wait for the film and Michael Giacchino's score.

Well, J.J. Abrams shares about that, the potential for a sequel to CLOVERFIELD, and a possible adaptation of author Stephen King's THE DARK TOWER.

1-21-08 / Cloverfield 3 Days Later

Ok...I wasn't in CLOVERFIELD, but it sure felt that way...

1-18-08 certainly became a pretty famous date last year. We all knew something was coming...and whatever it was, it was going to be winning.

I was happy to see that I wasn't the only one that 1-18-08 would actually happen on 1-21-08 for. 1-21-08 almost didn't happen for me either, but a fired-up email from Cap was the final straw. I had to make sure I saw CLOVERFIELD tonight one way or another.

And now I have...and...

And, well, I still look like those guys up there. I did pretty good in not getting spoiled so this was, even 3-days-late, still a fresh ride for me. The film wasn't perfect (I got really bored at that party) and the whole "quest" of the film was just a bit beyond my ability to suspend disbelief. But that being said, CLOVERFIELD, just isn't about such details. It is about taking a wild ride for 90 minutes or so. It's about seeing how many times one movie can make you say "Dizzam!" outloud. It's about, for some of us, seeing if a movie without a score, can really be enjoyable.

Suffice it to say that this film is likely to be one the few, if not the only, movie with no score that get's any coverage at this site. But CLOVERFIELD warrants it. Scores help us connect to the emotions of a film or tv-show or game, but a film like this would be hindered by a musical score. So this is the first (and probably only) sans-soundtrack-experience post I'll ever make.

No there's no score to buy for CLOVERFIELD, but it is certainly one ticket you should buy. Watching it on your home theater (no matter how great you think yours might be) won't do it justice.

Once in a while a movie comes out that will clearly shake up Hollywood a little. I can see CLOVERFIELD doing a few things:

1) Launching a barrage of copy-cat-docu-monster-flicks

2) Changing the way studios look at January in terms of releasing big-time movies.

3) Being the first of a new movie franchise (there's plenty of directions to go from the end of this film)

If you haven't seen it yet, it's too late for you to make it "1-21-08." I suggest you make it "1-22-08" and no later.

Top Stuff from 2007

"2007 sucked."

You and I both have likely heard that quite a few times recently. Beyond referencing their own personal challenges faced during the last year, some have also been eluding to the year in entertainment. Granted, the year hasn't ended on not the nicest of notes with the writers strike and a sub-par-holiday-movie season, but 2007 certainly wasn't all bad.

Was there actually anything really good in 2007? Of course there was...you just have to think for a second or two. Nothing coming to mind? Ok...I'm here to help. Over the next few days, I'm going to post my list of 2007 Goodness. One note for you - this list isn't all music-specific, but good stuff pertaining to movies, tv, games and music.

Viral Marketing for CLOVERFIELD

During the disappointing Summer of 2007, some life was injected into our "expectators" (our internal organ which allows us to get psyched for some upcoming flick, game, or new technological revolution). I'm not quite sure where the expectator is located, but I've heard it's near the pancreas.... Anyway, many people's expectators got to working as an unnamed trailer was released, followed by stills and an obscure site: http://www.1-18-08.com/

Speculation has run rampant since July but most of us know now that these tidbits turned out to be some clever viral marketing for J J Abrams latest flick, CLOVERFIELD. The site ethanhaaswasright.com appeared to be more viral goodness, but was actually a game, which turned out to be ALPHA OMEGA, an rpg video game set to release the same day, 01/18/08, as CLOVERFIELD. Ah well.

Still, all of the official viral stuff was enough to get me excited at the possibilities for this film. No word on who is scoring the picture yet. The safe bet would seem to be on Michael Giacchino, but how cool would it be if Abrams got really innovative and had no score at all? Wait...what am I saying????
