300 Soundtrack by Tyler Bates

300 (Soundtrack) by Tyler Bates
Cinematic Metal
by Christopher Coleman

Since mid-2006, there were rumblings of a new kind of movie on the horizon. Director Zack Snyder had already broken away from the norm with his work for SIN CITY, but was positioned to distance himself and his work even further with his next project, 300, a film adaptation of another Frank Miller graphic novel. Since then, much ado has been made about the director's strong visual aesthetic for the film... and rightly so. Without a doubt, 300 is a film that truly bombards one's ocular organs, but Snyder didn't stop there. Brought on to match the visual intensity of this film was composer Tyler Bates.

Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles by Scott Glasgow

Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles (Soundtrack) by Scott GlasgowSpace Operanime
Review by Christopher Coleman

It could be argued that the original ROBOTECH series of 1985 brought anime fandom in America to a new level and finished opening the door which the likes of SPEED RACER and STARBLAZERS had begun. Since 1985, the beloved series has garnered a huge worldwide following and has invaded the realms of comics, novels, video games, and full-length feature films. After a twenty-year hiatus, Harmony Gold's ROBOTECH franchise is back with its first full-length feature since the 1986, ROBOTECH: THE SHADOW CHRONICLES.

Some have called the ROBOTECH series an animated "space opera" which immediately brings to mind another franchise which took twenty years off between "episodes." Even further connections between ROBOTECH and STAR WARS can be drawn with the release of THE SHADOW CHRONICLES. In addition to the "space opera" moniker and the fact that Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) now voices one of Robotech's Commander Taylor, there is another connection worth examiing - that of the selection of composer SCOTT GLASGOW and his leitmotif-score.

The Queen by Alexandre Desplat

The Queen by Alexandre Desplat King of Queens
Review by Cap Stewart

THE QUEEN details the events immediately following the death of Princess Diana. The story focuses specifically on the contrast of responses between Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Tony Blair. The queen views the event—and her response—as a private affair, while Blair attempts to convince her otherwise. After all, he reasons, Diana was “the people’s princess,” a fact that necessitates a public response from Elizabeth, for the benefit of her subjects (and the world at large).

To score the film, director Stephen Frears brought in French composer Alexandre Desplat. Not having seen the film, I can’t comment on how well the music melds with the visuals. The tone of much of the score is much lighter than I would have expected, considering the subject matter. Then again, the point may be to mirror the queen’s avoidance of any display of public grief. Whatever the case, as a standalone album, THE QUEEN provides a pleasurable listening experience.

Star Trek XI . . .just keeps getting better!

STAR TREK: THE NEXT FEATURE FILM

First confirmation - Michael Giacchino doing the score. I consider that good news.

Second confirmation - JJ Abrams directing the film. Could be worse.

Third confirmation - Matt Damon as Cpt. Kirk. Adrian Brody as Spock. Gary Sinise as Dr. McCoy. If it's all true...that's pretty amazing. As hard as it is for me to envision anyone else in those iconic roles...these three? This could be fun.

No? Just have a look at the IGN article with the three stars pix. They work.
