2014 Cue Award Nominees Announcement

2014 Cue Award Nominees Announcement

Founded in 2002, The Cue Awards are the official awards of Tracksounds.com. The 2014 awards make for the seventh year the awards have given. The nominations are made by all eligible contributors to Tracksounds and The SoundCast in the last 12 months and seek to recognize “the best in soundtracks” for that year.

Each contributor may nominate up to FIVE titles in each category. Each makes their nominations, 1-5, in descending order. The highest ranked receives 5 points and the lowest 1 point. The nominations are tallied and five nominees in each category with the highest total points become the official nominees. Occasionally tiebreakers are necessary and to allieviate any ties, a simple vote is taken in each category.

*This year we had one special case, where, having six eligible voters, resulted in a tie remaining even after the tie-break votes were cast. Because of this you will find SIX nominees in the Best Sci-Fi/ Fantasy Score category.

This year we have made nominations in 11 categories.  Two award categories were removed this year: “Breakout Composer of the Year” and “Surprise of the Year.” But another category was re-added, “Best Theme.”

Starting today, The Genius Choice Vote is open! From Feb. 16 and running through Feb. 23, you will be able to cast your very own vote for each of the nominees. The winners of the Genius Choice Vote will be announced along with the official Cue Award Winners in a few weeks time.

This is the full interview with Genius Choice Vote winner for The 2012 Marius Award, Matt Uelmen, who won for his original score for the video game, Torchlight II (Runic Games).  An excerpt of this interview was presented, in part, in episode 58 of The SoundCast.

The Genius Choice Vote is the "people's choice" branch of The Cue Awards.  While the inaugural, official Marius Award went to Lifeformed (Terence Lee) for his score for Fastfall: Dustforce, the Genius Choice voter selected Matt Uelmen.

2012 Cue Award Nominees on a Journey

The Cue Awards are back!

For 2012, the idea of "the journey" was dominant.  Both THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY (HOWARD SHORE) and JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (ANDREW LOCKINGTON) each received a whopping 5 nominations!  Additionally, the PS3 video game, JOURNEY by Austin Wintory received a nomination as did Wintory, himself, for "Breakout Composer of the Year."

MICHAEL GIACCHINO's score for JOHN CARTER earned 3 nominations as did "Breakout Composer of the Year" nominee, GRANT KIRKHOPE's KINGDOMS OF AMALUR: RECKONING.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT: MISTS OF PANDARIA and composer NAOKI SATO each earned two Cue nominations.

In addition to these twelve awards, two special presentations will be made on the official 2012 Cue Awards podcast show (ep. 56 of The SoundCast).  THE MARIUS award will be presented by Marius Masalar for the best original score for an indy video game, while THE MONKEY KING award will be presented by Richard Buxton (@monkeybutlerman) for excellence in scoring originating in East Asia.

Once again, the award show will feature special appearances by many of the winners and promises to be the soundtrack-podcast-event of early 2013.  All winners will be officially announced first on the Soundcast and published shortly thereafter.

Additionally, visitors and listeners can participate in the GENIUS CHOICE vote, where they can make their own winner selection in each award category.  Voting will close at 11:59 PM ET on 2/22.
