Twenty Minutes of Mychael Danna's Score for Life of Pi

Recently, youtuber, Cinemamusica1, posted over twenty minutes of Mychael Danna's upcoming score for the highly anticipated film, LIFE OF PI.  We apparently get a sampling of the entire soundtrack which looks to have 28 tracks.  The original soundtrack isn't due to release from Sony Classical until November 19, 2012 in the United States.

It appears that Danna includes a number of ethnic instruments like the bansuri, instantly matching the mystical and quite beautiful tone that the film will also be creating visually.  We hear some wordless, female vocals, which further add to the exoticism.   There are one or two moments that give me hope that they might be building up to exultant moments like those found in his work for The Nativity Story.  The general tone of these samples does suggest that the score will likely stay more restrained than that though. The track "God Storm" does make it clear that Danna definitely delivers some dramatic, symphonic material for sure.

We have about a month to think about and anticipate it.

What do you think of you hearing here?  Does this make you look forward to hearing it in full or seeing the film any more?

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Soundtrack) by Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna - Review

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Soundtrack) by Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna - Review

A Troubled Family
Review by Marius Masalar

Everyone remember that tame, sane film of Terry Gilliam’s? Neither do I. Gilliam seems to be a visionary man of sorts, though precisely what visions those are we may never want to know beyond the scope of his consistently strange and controversial films. THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS, of course, also stands as a parting gesture from the late Heath Ledger, who passed away while the film was still in production in 2008. Critics have been ambivalent about how the major revisions to the script and cast that followed have affected the final product. What remains for certain is that the stellar cast has provided truly heartfelt performances in memory of their friend, and the film is just as lush and dark as the best of Gilliam’s oeuvre. There’s almost always a touch of magic in his work, and in this 2009 offering, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS, we find a culmination of many familiar thematic ideas. So too with the score, courtesy of the Canadian film scoring brothers, MYCHAEL and JEFF DANNA.

The Time Traveler's Wife (Soundtrack) by Mychael Danna - Review

The Time Traveler's Wife (Soundtrack) by Mychael Danna - Review

Love and Back Again
Review by Christopher Coleman

Romantic films that are box-office hits are pretty rare, although dozens upon dozens of them are released every year. For everY TITANIC, NOTEBOOK or ATONEMENT there are countless others that, while managing to draw many-a-female tear, don't draw equal numbers of dollars. On the other side of the ticket-stub, there have been even fewer films about time travel that turned into box office bonanzas. In fact, I cannot think of even one. So what an intriguing idea. Let's combine these two maddening concepts into a single film. That daring experiment comes in the form of THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE based on Audrey Neffinegger's hit 2003 book of the same title. Director Robert Schwentke did well to arm himself with Eric Bana (didn't he learn his lesson in Star Trek that time travel isn't a good idea?) and Rachel McAdams as the lead actors and screenwriter Joel Rubin, who won an Oscar for his screenplay for GHOST. Still, the potential cosmic backlash in combining such deep issues of the mind (or science) with those of the heart could be more than a bit devastating to all involved...including audiences.

As opposed to his vengeful mission in Star Trek earlier this year, this time a genetic defect keeps Mr. Bana time-hoping in and out of the life of his future, current, and past wife. While the notion of meeting your, full-grown, future husband while you are still an adolescent be romantic, the repercussions of having a disappearing husband are numerous...and would seem to be clear. Of course, that's where the heart closes it's eyes and dives head long anyway. I had vainly hoped that there would be some balance to all of the lovey-dovey-ness by way of explanation of this time-travelling issue. Plain and simple, there was none. I should have know it, but THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE focuses on the emotional repercussions of this unique relational issue. The film makes no attempt to satisfy the intellectual conundrums it flaunts in our faces and this has left some sadly disconnected with this couple and their plight.

Regardless of the film's many weaknesses, the glaring strength is composer MYCHAEL DANNA's beautiful, original score. It will come as no surprise that Danna's music features many of the main staples of the romantic score: brilliant strings, soulful piano, woodwinds, cello...the works. With these in hand, DANNA goes on to craft some truly intoxicating, thematic material. Wave upon wave of musical romance is balance out with some evocative instrumentation and production representing the idea of time travel. Through his well-crafted score, MYCHAEL DANNA helps you to feel this destined love, while simultaneously making you ponder on this exotic dilemma these lovers are in.

DAWN OF THE SNOW WALKER

Opus Ed
(originally posted 7/16/2007)

In the schlog of Summer and the tyranny of the box office...I have come across a number of entertaining pieces of film music that bear mentioning. Forget about the fact that there is no score release of SPIDERMAN 3 or TRANSFORMERS (yet). There's plenty of stuff out there waiting to be discovered. Here are a couple scores that I'm getting a lot of mileage out of in recent weeks.

THE SNOW WALKER by Mychael Danna - this is a gem of a little film with a gem of a score. Not many have seen the film and even less have taken notice of its score. Thankfully, Mychael Danna has released it on iTunes. There are a couple of strong themes and a beautiful blending of Americana a la Michael Kamen and Thomas Newman. It's an intimate and beautiful score...just like the film and both are highly recommended.

RESCUE DAWN by Klaus Badelt - This film has been a long time coming and you can probably hear get a hold of the soundtrack before the movie comes anywhere near a theater in your neck of the woods. A somber, surprisingly engaging score for a film that I can hardly wait to see myself. Word of Christian Bale's performance was inviting enough, but now, having heard Klaus Badelt's heartfelt music, that film will be irresistable.

Who says scores don't sell tickets?
