Soundclips from Olivier Deriviere's Game Score for Remember Me

Soundclips from Olivier Deriviere's Game Score for Remember Me

Composer Olivier Deriviere recently posted a few new clips from his work on the upcoming, CAPCOM game, REMEMBER ME.  The five clips give us a peek at, what sounds to be, a fairly eclectic blend of styles and techniques.  From the heroic, yet mysteriously futuristic vibe of "Nilin the Hunter" to electronically edgy "Fragments" to the Don Davis-like "Memory Recontruction," Deriviere's work here promises much and looks like it could end up being one of the most interesting games and game scores of 2013.

So what's your take on these clips?  Digging the sound or what?

If you're really into it you can pre-order REMEMBER ME (PS3) at Amazon.

Twenty Minutes of Mychael Danna's Score for Life of Pi

Recently, youtuber, Cinemamusica1, posted over twenty minutes of Mychael Danna's upcoming score for the highly anticipated film, LIFE OF PI.  We apparently get a sampling of the entire soundtrack which looks to have 28 tracks.  The original soundtrack isn't due to release from Sony Classical until November 19, 2012 in the United States.

It appears that Danna includes a number of ethnic instruments like the bansuri, instantly matching the mystical and quite beautiful tone that the film will also be creating visually.  We hear some wordless, female vocals, which further add to the exoticism.   There are one or two moments that give me hope that they might be building up to exultant moments like those found in his work for The Nativity Story.  The general tone of these samples does suggest that the score will likely stay more restrained than that though. The track "God Storm" does make it clear that Danna definitely delivers some dramatic, symphonic material for sure.

We have about a month to think about and anticipate it.

What do you think of you hearing here?  Does this make you look forward to hearing it in full or seeing the film any more?

Dredd Soundtrack Samples by Paul Leonard-Morgan

Metropolis Movie Music gives us a glimpse into composer Paul Leonard-Morgan's latest original score for DREDD.  The original soundtrack will release in digital format on September 3 with the physical release following one week later on September 10.

DREDD starring Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Bourne Supremecy, Lord Of The Rings), Olivia Thirlby (Juno) and Lena Headey (Game Of Thrones) was written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine).  Garland also produced the film alongside Andrew Macdonald (Sunshine, Trainspotting) and Allon Reich (Never Let Me Go).  DREDD was directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point). DREDD (3D) will be released in the UK on September 7.

Paul Leonard-Morgan is best known for his score for last year’s box office No 1 hit Limitless starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, and directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist).  This soundtrack earned him a nomination for the prestigious World Soundtrack Discovery Award. Previously he had been the composer for the BBC’s award-winning drama Spooks.  Leonard-Morgan was also honoured by the US Olympic Committee when chosen to compose the official US Olympic Team Anthem (previously scored by John Williams) and was also commissioned to compose the music for the official launch ceremony of The Freedom Towers, the iconic designs which will eventually replace the Twin Towers at Ground Zero.

Speaking about the soundtrack, composer Paul Leonard-Morgan said: “From a music point of view, I wanted to create a sound which fitted a future set in 100 years time, so traditional orchestra was out of the question. I started off doing some band-based stuff, but it felt too safe and overly-produced, so I ended up going down a really electronic vibe - taking all my 80’s synths and present day sound modules, creating some really screwed up sounds and putting them through countless distortion and fx pedals. I was looking to create a timeless score which couldn’t be placed in any particular era. So it’s ended up being a cross between a modern dance track and evocative soundscapes.”

For the slo-mo music, I used this incredible new timestretch software called Paul. I composed and recorded new tracks with real instruments, and then slowed them down by thousands of percent to match the vibe of the visuals, adding some realtime score over the top of it. So 1 second of written score could end up lasting 10 minutes. It sounds weird, but it creates some truly beautiful sounds. Really ethereal. It takes you to a completely different world. Getting to do experimental things like this in a film score isn’t something that happens every day, so it was really exciting pushing back the boundaries.”

So  do you like it more, less or do these clips not make any difference to you?

PS - I inverted the cover art, just to make it easy to identify these second set of clips.

Surprising Soundclips from Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Soundtrack by Christophe Beck

Surprising Soundclips from Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Soundtrack by Christophe Beck

In just a few short days PERCY JACKSON and the OLYMPIANS makes its way to the big screen with the first of, what is likely to become, one of Hollywood's newest franchises.  Admittedly, the trailers did not do much for me...in much the same way HARRY POTTER film trailers didn't.  But I have in recent years become a quasi-fan of ol' Pottah, so

To continue on this little train of honesty, I wasn't all that excited with the prospect of composer CHRISTOPHE BECK writing the score for this film...although I do love his work for WE ARE MARSHALL.  After stumbling upon Amazon.com's soundclips from THE LIGHTNING THIEF, I was quite shocked, happily shocked, as to how engaging the music seems to be.

Not sure how the film and/or franchise will turn out, but we've learned in recent years that February is no longer a throw-away-month when it comes to potentially-good movies.  Now with Beck's score sounding like it is going to be an early bit of "epicness" that seem to be relegated to the ranks of video game scores these days, I've got at least one eyebrow raised in anticipation for the film...to go along with my two, fully-attentive ears.

Three tracks from Death Race by Paul Haslinger

Death Race (Soundtrack clips) by Paul Haslinger

Jason Statham leads the cast of an action-thriller set in the post-industrial wasteland of tomorrow, with the world's most brutal sporting event as its backdrop. A penitentiary full of felons has inspired the jailers to create a grisly pastime ripe for lucrative kickbacks. Adrenalized inmates, a global audience hungry for televised violence, and a spectacular arena come together to form the Death Race.

Three-time speedway champion Jensen Ames (Statham) is an expert at survival in the harsh landscape that has become our country. Just as he thinks he has turned his life around, the ex-con is framed for a gruesome murder he didn't commit. Forced to don the mask of the mythical driver Frankenstein -- a crowd favorite who seems impossible to kill -- Ames is given an easy choice by Terminal Island's warden (Joan
Allen): suit up or rot away in a cell.

His face hidden by a metallic mask, Ames will be put through an insane three-day challenge. He must survive a gauntlet of the most vicious criminals in the country's toughest prison to claim the prize of freedom. Driving a monster car outfitted with machine guns, flamethrowers and grenade launchers, one desperate man will destroy anything in his path to win the most twisted spectator sport on Earth.

About The Score - Note From The Director:

I was determined that Death Race would look like no other movie in the summer of 2008 - tough, gritty and uncompromisingly hardcore. The difficulty was to match a sound to this vision. I needed a soundtrack that would reek of dirt and sweat, rust and blood.

Paul stepped up to the challenge and more than delivered. It is my favorite soundtrack - edgy, uncompromising and filled with invention. It really sounds like nothing I've heard before.

Take a listen and you'll see what I mean.
