Shyamalan Happens
Review by Christopher Coleman

I've long been an M. Night Shyamalan supporter...even in the face of pretty harsh criticism. Yes, indeed, I liked LADY IN THE WATER: the film, the score, everything. I don't think there is a more maligned director in Hollywood right now. I've lost count of the number of failings he is accused of having, but perhaps the chief among them is "pretentiousness." Well, one man's pretension is another man's...creativity. Oh yes. That word was certainly dusted off and included in many reviews and messages boards once again when it came to Shyamalan's latest project,THE HAPPENING. In most cases, Shyamalan's stylistic storytelling and sometimes cryptic moralizing wins me over - despite awkward dialogue and off-kilter acting; however, this streak ends with THE HAPPENING for me. To his detractors, all I have left to say is "Shyamalan happens." He does and will continue to do things his way and enough people keep watching his films to keep him gainfully employed. If nothing else, director M. Night Shyamalan is consistent in a few areas. First, his films rarely adhere to Hollywood-conventions. Second, he always seek to make some sort of moral or existential point. Third, he always brings on composer James Newton-Howard to provide the musical score.

M. Night Shyamalan has taken both "awkward dialogue" and "off-kilter acting" to a new level in THE HAPPENING. Yes - the point of the film is well-taken, despite being misunderstood, by some, as a film pushing the "green-agenda." It's not really about that at all. Yes, we, the human race, are screwing up the planet but we have also been screwing up each other for quite some time, and the earth ain't none to happy 'bout it. The film is not making a statement about treating the earth better as much as it is about treating the human race better. I can only surmise that our leafy cohabitants have figured out that if we treat our own species so badly, we are going to continue to treat the earth even worse. Humans have become a threat to everything. So, the earth does what most living things do when threatened; avoid or eliminate threat. What more clever thing than to cause the threat eliminate itself? Quite economical. Once again Shyamalan has come up with an "idea" that is quite interesting. Plant life adapting, evolving, communicating, and collaborating to rid themselves of this fleshy threat? Who wouldn't love that? When it comes to the execution of this story, though, that is another matter all together. To put it flat, Shyamalan truly missed it this time and has left me little to argue on his behalf with. Other than the creepy Betty Buckley (she'll always be Mrs. Eight is Enough to me), the casting is downright awful and the script given to them is even worse. Yes, M. Night manages get our pulses moving with a few disturbing moments of self-execution and murder, but if it takes that sort of thing to save a film, then that film has got big troubles. Other than the premise, there isn't a lot to take away from THE HAPPENING. Now, for some film score fans, the lone silver lining of any M. Night movie comes with the knowledge that there will likely be another magical, mystical, beautiful effort from composer JAMES NEWTON HOWARD. So is THE HAPPENING saved by Newton-Howard's contribution this time out?

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emporer - Official Site Launched

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emporer - Official Site Launched

The official site for the sequel: THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPORER has just launched. The new site includes all the standard goodies and also features music that would appear to be from the original score by RANDY EDELMAN. Take a look and listen for yourself and see what you think. It's only one piece, so I'm hoping there is some decent counterpoint and a strong romantic theme - that's where Edelman excels, so let's hear it!

David Newman to Score Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT

David Newman to Score Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT
Just received the official press release for composer DAVID NEWMAN's signing as composer for the upcoming Frank Miller adaptation of Will Eisner's graphic novel series: THE SPIRIT. The news was originally broken on upcomingfilmscores.com back in April, but this official press release just re-ignites my excitement. It's been a while since there has been a "big" David Newman project. He has been one of Hollywood's most talented, yet most under-utilized for some time. Come Christmas 2008, we should have something fresh to feast our ears upon! How do you think Newman will do on THE SPIRIT?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AWARD WINNING COMPOSER DAVID NEWMAN SIGNED TO SCORE THE SPIRIT

Los Angeles, CA (June 30, 2008) — Academy Award® nominated composer David Newman (ANASTASIA, ICE AGE, The Phantom) has been brought on board to score The Spirit, a film written and directed by Frank Miller (creator of SIN CITY and 300) and based on the classic comic book series by the legendary Will Eisner. The announcement was jointly made today by Lionsgate’s President of Film Production, Mike Paseornek and producers Deborah Del Prete and Gigi Pritzker of Odd Lot Entertainment.

THE SPIRIT, which opens Christmas Day, stars Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Stana Katic, Dan Lauria, Jaime King, Paz Vega and Louis Lombardi. Odd Lot and Lionsgate are production partners on the film. Odd Lot’s Del Prete and Pritzker are producing along with Michael Uslan of Batfilm Productions Inc. Batfilm co-founder Benjamin Melniker and Steven Maier are executive producing, along with Odd Lot’s Bill Lischak and Lionsgate’s Michael Burns and Mike Paseornek. Odd Lot's Linda McDonough and Batfilm/Comic Book Movies’ F.J. DeSanto are co-producing.

“Frank (Miller) and I feel that David Newman is the perfect composer for this movie and we are fortunate that he has joined our creative team,” said Del Prete. “David’s unique musical sensibilities combined with his passion for the subject matter and the timelessness of this film perfectly compliment our vision for The Spirit.”

Winner of 12 BMI Film Music Awards and an accomplished violinist and successful concert conductor, Newman served a four-year stint as the music director for the Sundance Institute, and has conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra on several occasions. He was elected president of The Film Music Society in February of 2007. Newman’s numerous credits include the scores for SERENITY, OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY, ARE WE THERE YET?, THE CAT IN THE HAT, DADDY DAY CARE, HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS, SCOOBY-DOO, DR. DOLITTLE 2, NUTTY PROFESSOR I and II, HEATHERS, THE FLINTSTONES, PARADISE, THE WAR OF THE ROSES and THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN, amongst many others. He is represented by First Artists Management.

The SpiriT is an action-adventure-romance story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he's going to devastate the Spirit's beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront ... all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Lionsgate is releasing the film in North America, the U.K. and Australia. Sony Pictures Releasing International is handling distribution in many European territories and Latin America. Odd Lot International is distributing to the rest of the world. Rof the world.

Never Laugh at Animated Dragons
Review by Christopher Coleman

The Dragonlance franchise has been around almost as long as Dungeons and Dragons. This particular world of the fantasy genre was first opened up by Laura and Tracey Hickman with their book DRAGONS OF AUTUMN TWILIGHT. From that were spawned nearly 200 novels, board games and video games. After decades of decent popularity with the D&D faithful, the world of DRAGONLANCE came to video in January 2008.

The animated feature, DRAGONLANCE: DRAGONS OF AUTUMN'S TWILIGHT was certainly shy of the sort of resources that many animated features get today, including those made for television or direct-to-video projects. Unfortunately, the producers were unable to hide this fact and as a result DRAGONLANCE is going to be, for most adults, a very difficult thing to watch. While children, who simply love anything animated, may find this presentation entertaining, most will find ample opportunity to cringe: whether it be from awkward 3D animated characters, stilted writing, uncomfortable, American accented-characters (forgive the stereotype, but British or some European accent is a must for these types of productions), or the painful combination of the lot. These were some of the most difficult 90 minutes of viewing I have had in years. If I were a drinking man, this would have been a much more enjoyable experience playing a Lord of the Rings Reference Drinking Game while watching. All of that negativity spouted, one thing the producers did do right - they hired composer KARL PREUSSER to lay down the musical score. It was Preusser's surprisingly robust score that convinced me to give them film itself a shot. Sadly, not even the composer's dynamic score could lift this feature off the ground, but as a stand-alone experience, DRAGONLANCE proves to be a surprisingly entertaining listen.

Hans Zimmer and The RZA Together on Babylon A.D.?

Hans Zimmer and The RZA Together on Babylon A.D.?
Firstshowing.net has broken the news that composer HANS ZIMMER will be collaborating with THE RZA on the upcoming sci-fi flick which stars Vin Diesel - BABYLON A.D. Certainly not the team that would seem like a natural, but in the end, this collaborative effort could result in a truly unique sound. It appears composer Hans Zimmer is liking the collaborative-thing more and more as time goes on.

Garry Schyman composes "Praan" for Matt Harding's "Dancing 2008"

Garry Schyman composes
You may recognize the name of GARRY SCHYMAN as the composer for video game scores BIOSHOCK and DESTROY ALL HUMANS, but recently another work of his was released with the latest edition of Matthew Harding's online video "DANCING" for 2008.

GARRY SCHYMAN met the video's creator MATT HARDING at the E3 convention back in 2005. Harding was once a game developer and DESTROY ALL HUMANS was originally his idea. In 2006, when Harding needed music for "Dancing 2006," Garry Schyman was the only composer Matt knew. When asked to write the music, Schyman nearly turned it down, but changed his mind at the last minute...and the rest is web-video history.

In the 2008 version of the video, pay close attention as you will see GARRY SCHYMAN conducting the string section used in the piece with Matt, of course, doing his patented jig just in front. The music you hear is entitled "Praan," and was composed specifically for this video and his now available at AmazonMP3!

Before you watch, I'll briefly comment that the concept of this video is very simple, yet eventually came to affect me profoundly (as well as quite a few other people). The first time I watched it, I laughed. The second time, I found tears rolling across my smile. I wasn't quite sure why...but soon the thought that dawned on me (and is perhaps the point of this video) that despite all the things that divide us in this world of ours . . .

We all dance....even together, if we so choose.

You can read more about Matt Harding's videography at his official site, Where the Hell is Matt?

Jeff Rona's "Songs of the Sea: The Regatta Suite"

Jeff Rona's
Just received the official press release for composer JEFF RONA's current project for the 2008 Olympiad in Beijing China - which beings on 8/8/08. A few weeks ago, I posted our own interview with the composer. You can check that out here. Let's hope for an official release of this work ... and soon.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Acclaimed film composer Jeff Rona has composed “Songs of the Sea: The Regatta Suite” at the invitation of the International Olympics Committee and the City of Qingdao, host of the 2008 Olympics Regatta. The music will be the theme of the Olympic regatta competition.

On July 16, in Qingdao at the Olympic Village, Rona will conduct a 110 piece orchestra, traditional Chinese musicians and one of the country’s top sopranos in the first ever performance of the music. Rona has tapped renown poet David Whyte and singer/songwriter Lisa Gerrard (of Dead Can Dance) to create words as part of the concert. Rona will bring the production to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong following the Qingdao world premier.

"For as long as I can remember. I have truly loved the Olympics - the spirit of global friendship and competition. A chance to see the best of the best" says Rona.

"The Olympics are about being a part of the world,” he continued. “The IOC wanted music that had a universal sound, one that conveyed the scope and prestige of the games. Dongxiao Xu, conductor of the Qingdao Symphony and a musical director for the Regatta, was introduced to my film scores quite by accident. He felt that this style was what they wanted the Olympic concert to feel like. I met with him both in Los Angeles and China, along with other musical and cultural directors for the city and the games, who were given the task of commissioning a composer for the concert - and it all went very well."

Rona traveled to the seaside town of Qingdao in January to tour the just completed Olympic Village, meet with the artistic directors, and get a feel for what he might compose. During his stay he walked through small village street markets, sat in a 1000 year old Taoist monastery and looked at the harbor where the races will take place. He visited all the concert venues throughout the city, dined with the local residents, and met with everyone involved in the regatta. He also went to Beijing to see the Olympic facilities, meet with leading Chinese musicians, tour the Great Wall of China. He also traveled to Xi'an to see the Terra Cotta warriors and travel through the country side to the Famen Temple - one of the holiest Buddhist shrines in China. All to get a better sense of a country most westerners know little about outside of politics.

Upon his return to Los Angeles, he began to sketch the 12 pieces that would make up the Regatta Suite. Using the state of the art computer technology he uses for film and television scores, he composed the symphonic pieces in a way that reflected his experiences in China, and brought his own personal sense of music and culture to the Olympics. He returns to China in July to record the Suite before the big tour begins in the 2 weeks leading up to the opening of the games.

ABOUT JEFF RONA

Among Rona’s many credits are: Ridley Scott's "White Squall," "The Mothman Prophesies," "Exit Wounds," "The Quiet", “1000 Roads”, and musical contributions to Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic," and "Kafka,” "Black Hawk Down," "Mission:Impoossible 2," "Assasins," "Gladiator," "The Net," "Thin Red Line," "The Fan," "Bobby," and a number of documentaries including the multi award-winning "Sharkwater." His television projects include the acclaimed series "Homicide:Life On The Street" with director Barry Levinson, "Chicago Hope" and "Profiler," Steven Spielberg’s first TV project "High Incident," “Traffic,” Robert Altman’s award-winning "Gun" anthology, Frank Darabont’s "Black Cat Run" for HBO, and international auteur Wong Kar Wai's film "The Following" for BMW Films. He has also worked on albums with artists Jon Hassell, Azam Ali, Nyaz, and others.

PUBLIC ENEMIES FOR ACCLAIMED FILMMAKER MICHAEL MANN

The Score Will Be Goldenthal’s 2nd for Mann, Following 1995’s Heat

Los Angeles, CA – June 27, 2008 – Oscar®-winning composer Elliot Goldenthal (Frida) has been signed to score Universal Pictures’ action-thriller from acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann, Public Enemies. Currently shooting in Chicago, Public Enemies stars Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in the incredible story of criminal folk hero John Dillinger (Depp), whose wave of bank robberies and the subsequent FBI manhunt, commanded by J. Edgar Hoover and run by Special Agent Melvin Purvis (Bale), fascinated the nation in the 1930s. The film also stars Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, Billy Crudup, Stephen Dorff, Rory Cochrane, Stephen Lang, David Wenham, Stephen Graham, Channing Tatum, and Jason Clarke. It arrives in theatres in July 2009.

Public Enemies reunites Goldenthal with Mann, with whom he previously teamed in 1995 for Heat. Goldenthal is an Oscar®-winning composer who creates works for orchestra, theatre, opera, ballet, and film. In 2003, he was honored with the Academy Award® and a Golden Globe for Best Original Score for Frida. A double Oscar® nominee that year, Goldenthal received an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Song (“Burn it Blue” performed by Caetano Veloso). Goldenthal has also received two other Oscar® and two Golden Globe nominations for his scores for Interview With the Vampire (1994) and Michael Collins (1996) and Grammy nominations for A Time to Kill (1996) and Batman Forever (1995).

He has also been nominated for two Grammys, two Tony Awards, and three Chicago Film Critics Awards. Goldenthal received the L.A. Film Critics Award for Best Original Score for his work on Neil Jordan’s The Butcher Boy. His other film credits include Across the Universe (for which Goldenthal produced and arranged the songs along with T-Bone Burnett, and composed the original score), Titus, Drugstore Cowboy, and Alien3, among others.

Goldenthal has also composed music for more than a dozen theatrical productions including Juan Darién: A Carnival Mass, which received 5 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. His 3-act ballet of Othello, choreographed by Lar Lubovitch and commissioned by the American Ballet Theater and San Francisco Ballet, debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1997 and was broadcast by PBS’s prestigious arts series Great Performances as a two-hour special performed by the San Francisco Ballet. This program garnered Goldenthal an Emmy nomination. In 2006, Goldenthal’s original 3-act opera Grendel, directed by Julie Taymor, premiered at the Los Angeles Opera and became one of the most successful productions in its history.

The Incredible Hulk (Soundtrack) by Craig Armstrong - Review

The Incuredible Hulk (Soundtrack) by Craig Armstrong - Review
Musical Brutality
Review by Christopher Coleman

THE INCREDIBLE HULK is a bit of a reboot of the franchise - a much needed one. Ang Lee's attempt in 2003 fell flat with most critics and audiences. However, the failure of THE HULK did open the door for the "big guy" to come back, re-envisioned, after only 5 years. Director Louis Leterrier certainly didn't have the longest history of film making behind him prior to this film (which became another reason to substantiate doubts). With only THE TRANSPORTER 2 on his directorial resume, there was much room left to question the level of entertainment audiences would experience. To the suprise of some, myself included, Leterrier and company pulled it off. The tone and even the film's structure, to some degree, pays homage to the well-respected, 70s-television series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. This new INCREDIBLE HULK features solid writing, acting and action sequences which only get better and better until we reach the rock-em-sock-em finale! Indeed, our conflicted, yet lovable superhero is back and better than ever and one big reason for this is CRAIG ARMSTRONG's pile-driving score.

105 Piece Orchestra for THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPORER

105 Piece Orchestra for THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPORER
In a recent blog post, diretor ROB COHEN shares some thoughts about the final stages of the film, THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPORER. In sharing about the audio dubbing, he includes a couple of photos and comments about composer RANDY EDELMAN's score.

EDELMAN conducted the 105 piece London Symphony orchestra for a 10 days. Completing his "dragon trifecta" (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, Dragonheart), this bodes well for TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPORER.

Music from the TRANSFORMERS introduce the Lakers at NBA Finals Game 4

What was that music used during the introduction of the LOS ANGELES LAKERS before the start of Game 4 of the NBA Finals? That was none other than STEVE JABLONSKY'S score from last year's TRANSFORMERS. The cue used was "Autobots," so guess who that makes the BOSTON CELTICS.

If the Lakers have any shot at winning this...they better also adopt the Witwicky motto, "No Sacrifice, No Victory!"

The Life Before Her Eyes by James Horner (Soundtrack) Review

The Life Before Her Eyes by James Horner (Soundtrack) Review
Almost-nothingness
Review by Christopher Coleman

Pairing up again with director Vadim Perelman was full of potential. James Horner's emotionally deep score for Perelman's last film, HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG, was a signicant contributor to the power of the film. Their first collaboration provided one of the more emotionally charged and throught provoking movie experiences of 2006. Again the two come together to tell another tragic story in LIFE BEFORE HER EYES.

Even more visually stunning than his last film, the LIFE BEFORE YOUR EYES, tells the sad tale of a woman, Diana, who is scarred by Columbine-like shooting at her high-school. Fifteen years older, she has a daughter of her own, who is more like her than she would want her to be, and now struggles with the renewed memories of the horrific event. It seems to be en vogue to, whenever directors choose to tell a story in a-typical fashion (ie. obscure angle or ending-twist), summarily dismiss them as being pretentious and too high-minded. M. Night Shyamalan has suffered this fate and now Vadim Perelman does as well. Yes...LIFE BEFORE HER EYES might be "a bit much" for those who belong to the blockbuster-or-die-crowd, but sometimes it is nice to have other parts of the brain or, God forbid, a part of the soul, stimulated or challenged.
